The town of Nittenau organizes a “Ghost Walk” festival several times a year, during which this castle is also visited. The castle itself is well surrounded by beech trees. Therefore, it is difficult to catch a glimpse of the Regental from outside the castle. This is most likely to happen in winter.

A steep single trail leads south into the Mariental, which is a welcome adventure for brave mountain bikers. Attention: Hikers also like to use this path! Here are the opening times:

The construction of the buildings that have been preserved points to the middle of the 14th century as the date of construction or to the two builders at the time, Duke Ludwig the Strict and his successor Duke Ludwig IV, later Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. The latter equipped Stockenfels Castle with its own chapel. After the death of Emperor Ludwig, Stockenfels frequently changed owners, among whom there were even robber lords. In 1351 the property came to the patrician Auer family, who originally came from Regensburg but had to leave their home town in 1334. In 1372, after some war chaos, Stockenfels was taken over by the Wittelsbachs. In 1430, the knight Georg Heuras von Satzdorf took over the castle.
In 1510, the Heuras sold the lordship to Albrecht von Wirsberg, who was the district judge and caretaker of Neunburg v. Wald. A period followed during which the owners constantly changed.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Baron Karl von Eckart acquired the ruins, which are still owned by his descendants, the Counts of Mühle-Eckart. The current owner is Gabriele Countess von Drechsel, née Countess Mühle-Eckart, who is also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the castle.

Stockenfels Castle Ruins

Stockenfels Castle was probably built around 1300, but was not mentioned in documents until 1340 as the property of Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. In 1351 the Wittelsbachs pawned the castle to the Regensburg patrician Auer family, who used it as a base for raids on the imperial city. In 1372 the Wittelsbachs recaptured Stockenfels from Wernher the Auer and have occupied it ever since with their caretakers. Since 1430 there has been a chain of different owners, some of whom were notorious robber barons.

In 1565 the Count Palatine gave the castle to his advisor Hans Schott, other members of this family were employed by the Palatinate Wittelsbachs in Amberg as caretakers at the Wetterfeld and Cham castles. The trace of the Schotts only goes away with the defeat of their feudal lord, the Elector Frederick V of the Palatinate, in 1620 at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War. The subsequent owners continued to change constantly, and repairs were only carried out in a makeshift manner. As a result, the decay continued into modern times. At the beginning of the 19th century, Baron Karl von Eckart acquired the ruins, which are still owned by his descendants, the Counts von der Mühle-Eckart.
The core castle of the Stockenfels ruins consists of a residential tower, the courtyard with a well and kitchen building, and a divided residential building, which form a long rectangle in linear sequence. The outer walls are made of irregular granite blocks, with the corners made of carefully hewn humpback blocks. On the south and east sides, you can still make out a front kennel with a semi-circular wall tower. About 10 meters below the castle in the west is the rectangular outer castle. It was probably added later and enclosed utility buildings.
The residential tower at the north end is particularly interesting. It has five floors, is 16 m high and has 1.7 m thick walls. The entrance is 4 m high. The lower floors date from the time of construction. The upper floors date from around 1515 and were separated by beamed ceilings. The windows on the south side show coats of arms of Upper Palatinate knight families: the Heuraus, the Fraunberger, the Hofer zu Lobenstein and the Sattelbogen.
The residential building in the south of the inner castle has two cellars and a vaulted ground floor with narrow light slits. The upper floor was the main living space of the castle and has larger arched windows.
