In the sixteenth century the port continued to grow and in the nineteenth century with the construction of the Walcheren Canal, the port of Vlissingen gradually became one of the most important ports in the Netherlands. After the Second World War, the port of Vlissingen-Oost was constructed, after which the port continued to grow. Since 1998 the port of Vlissingen has had a partnership with the port of Terneuzen. These two ports are known together as the Port of Zeeland, also known as the Zeeland Seaports. Where formerly the VOC ships from the west moored at Vlissingen, you can now find large container ships.
