The Castello Scaligero from the 13th century separates the old town Sirmione from the mainland. Many tourists frolic behind in the shops, restaurants and ice cream parlors of the old town. If you do not like it, choose the promende on the stone beach to get to the top.

The Scaligerburg (Castello Scaligero) is probably the most formative building in Sirmione.
The once purely military character of the fortress can still be seen today when you stroll over the high battlements and through the sober interior of the castle.
In contrast to the Scaligerburg in Malcesine, only a few living and utility rooms can be visited in the Sirmion fortress - instead, the castle inspires with a great view over Lake Garda and the harbor basin, strategically placed below its walls, in which the Lake Garda fleet was once located .
A total of 3 corner towers and one of what were formerly two drawbridges as well as a lapidarium with Roman and medieval stone works are open to the public.
A visit to the Scaliger castle Sirmione can also be combined with a walk through the city itself and a visit to the Grotte di Catullo, which is just a little further away at the tip of the headland.

A beautiful castle. It is worth visiting the castle too. From the top you have a beautiful view of the peninsula. The pedestrian zone also begins from here. Cars are only allowed with permits.

Sirmione is a small place on the south shore of Lake Garda that is very popular with holidaymakers. A part of the village protrudes as a narrow and about three kilometers long headland to the north into the southern Lake Garda. At its narrowest and strategically important point, the former city lord of Verona, Mastino I delle Scala, had a fortified castle built on the walls of an old Roman fort in the middle of the 13th century, surrounded by a square wall with three towers. Today the Castello di Sirmione is one of the best preserved castles on Lake Garda and a popular excursion destination. The castle controlled the entrance to the old town of Sirmione and even today every visitor to the picturesque streets has to pass the fortified walls of the castle.

Especially due to its favorable traffic situation, the place gained importance during the Roman period, as it is located halfway between Brescia and Verona and has already been mentioned in the Roman Imperial Road Directory, in the Antonino itinerary. The Lombards later built numerous monasteries and churches during their reign in the city. Then Venetians and Scaliger ruled over the city. They completely rebuilt the once Roman-built shelters and the individual components of the fortress, so that one no longer sees any of the original buildings today.
