This is the fourth Wasdale peak on our Trail 100 list, but despite being the lowest, Yewbarrow is more than a match for its neighbours. Taking the form of an upturned ship’s hull, the mountain is steep sided, intricately craggy at either end, with a long, drawn out summit that opens up some of the best scenery in the Lakes.

Despite not being the biggest of fells (at 627m) and the summit being less than a mile from the nearest road - many say this is one of the toughest Wainwrights on the basis of there being no 'easy' walkers route to the top. On this occasion we went up via Stirrup Crag and down between Dropping Crag and Bell Rib. Both the ascent and descent involved getting our hands on the rock, but as it was dry it was mostly a great deal of fun. We enjoyed a brilliant sunset on the summit. Wast Water (the deepest glacial lake in England), which can be admired from the summit, was absolutely still.

Great fell alongside Wast Water and very accessible from the car park at Overbeck Bridge. I went up on a drizzly day but still had a great scramble going up via the gullies between Dropping Crag and Bell Rib. Didn't get the blue sky views but at least I had some and it was good scramble outing. Not wanting to down climb Stirrup Crag in the wet I took a side track just back from North Top coming off the Western side.

There is a grade 3 Scramble at the foot of the Bell Rib. Tried to do in Nov but to wet and exposed.. One for the summer. Skirting to the left of the face there are some gully scrambles leading to the summit.

Yewbarrow stands at 627m (2057ft) in heigh. It falls into the following main summit categories: Wainwright, Nuttall, Hewitt, Birket, Fellranger.
It overlooks the bustling Wast Water lake, whose shores are popular with the campervan and tent crowds. The summit gives great views accross to Scafell Pike, Sca Fell and Great Gable. It can be reached via the spine up from Wast water or straight up the side if you are brave enough to tackle the steep ascent. It forms part of the Mosedale Horseshoe, being the final summit, where you will ascent the far side via an enjoyable scramble up Stirrup Crag.

Yewbarrow is an excellent viewpoint for the Scafells and Pillar range, despite being only 627m high. It is an entertaining peak as the usual route up via Bell Rib is a grade 1 scramble and another Grade 1 scramble is encountered on the descent via Stirrup Crag to Dore Head (though this can be bypassed by leaving the ridge earlier).
Yewbarrow is very steep on the Wastwater side so the summit is a very airy viewpoint.
