Where the Romantic Road, the Via Claudia Augusta and the German Alpine Road meet, lies the small, historic Füssen in the Allgäu.
The dreams of two kings lie at the gates of the city: Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. In Füssen there are more than 2000 years of living history, which began with the Romans and experienced a first heyday with Emperor Maximilian I.
The second followed with the fairytale king Ludwig II.
Bavaria's highest city delights with medieval alleys, some historical buildings, the old city wall and much more. Numerous cozy cafes and restaurants, shops and squares invite you to take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian zone.

The figure on the fountain represents Saint Magnus, who is regarded as a missionary in the Allgäu. He vanquishes evil, in the form of the dragon, with the cross.
The Magnus figure was cast in bronze and placed on a 2.40 m high column made of Epprechtstein granite.

The popular holiday town of Füssen in the Allgäu, known for numerous tourist attractions, can look back on around 700 years of town history. However, the origins of the emergence of the place even go back to Roman times. Where the city is today was one of the most important Roman roads, the Via Claudia Augusta, and as early as 260 AD a Roman military camp was set up on the site of today's Füssen.

So this place developed into a settlement and in the year 748 the monk Magnus, who was later canonized, built a cell in today's Füssen. Other monks followed and so the famous Benedictine monastery of St. Mang was founded at the request of the Bishop of Augsburg in the 8th century. A Frankish royal court was established around the same time.

In the 13th century, Füssen had become the largest town in the Allgäu. Sovereigns were the Bishops of Augsburg, who converted the High Castle into their summer residence.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Füssen became an important, nationwide trading center. The city experienced its heyday, even Emperor Maximilian I stayed in Füssen with his court about forty times (see article "City of Füssen in the Renaissance"). In 1562, Europe's first lute makers' guild was founded in Füssen, and the city subsequently gained great importance for western music history. However, the city's overall boom was slowed down by the Thirty Years' War, and better times only came at the end of the 19th century. The founding of the "mechanical rope factory" brought about an economic upswing in the region and when the Bavarian kings Maximilian I and Ludwig II had the magnificent castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau built, tourism also followed.

Today the region around Füssen is a tourist stronghold, known as the Königswinkel. Framed by magnificent mountains, with many picturesque lakes and cultural highlights nearby, Füssen still impresses with its medieval old town, with the many narrow streets and the fairytale flair of the royal castles Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle nearby.

Maximilian I. bzw.
