The cave was discovered by chance in 1900.

A young dog owner's dog had fallen into a hole. Unable to free the animal from its predicament himself, he sought help in the village to rescue the animal. Under the direction of Mr. Dubuisson, a police officer, several workers helped one of their number to descend to the bottom of the pit into which the dog had fallen. Without a lamp, the improvised rescuer rescued the dog from a height where dim daylight penetrated.

This incident quickly spread and caught the attention of a group of scientists who were roaming Belgium in search of underground cavities.
