It may be a little surprising, but attracted by the wealth of trout, the British were actually the first foreign visitors to the Wutach Gorge.

Moreover, they were so overwhelmed by the landscape that the Fishing Club in London took over the Bad Boll spa in 1894. It was also the English who opened up large parts of the gorge to nature lovers through wooden walkways and narrow paths through the rocks.

It was the tensions before the First World War that finally kept the English fly fishermen away, thereby sealing the gradual decline of the spa. From 1918 to 1960 a health insurance company operated the bath, then switched to the German Society for Merchant Recreation Homes and was last operated until 1977 as a clinic and later as a base for hikers. The main building burned down in 1975 before other buildings were demolished.

Today there are only a few stones left from Bad Boll and a small, but now also half-ruined chapel, which are partially overgrown by the bushes and trees.

A small rest area is all that is left for the tired hiker, 8.5 km after leaving Wutachmühle, to take a breather in the middle of a meadow with blooming meadow cranesbill and buttercups.

Bad Boll looks back on an eventful and centuries-old history. Already the nobles of Tannegg knew about the healing power of the spring. The highlight also experienced the internationally recognized bath in the mid-19th century until the beginning of the 20th Century under the ownership of Lord Mayor Karl Schuster from Freiburg from about 1870-1894 and the Fishing Club Ltd of London 1894-1913.

Prominent guests included u.a. F.W. Nietzsche and Sir Winston Churchill. Today, only the chapel built by OB Schuster in 1889 and listed as historical monument reminds of the historical values of this unique spa facility.

In the same year, the archbishop's ordinariate of Freiburg approved the blessing of the chapel by Reverend Fehrenbach of Gündelwangen, so that holy Mass could be celebrated. Since 1991, the Bad Boll facility has been owned by the state for the third time in its history.

Signs with the inscription "Do not enter collapse danger" deny access and are very thought-provoking! The unanimous opinion prevails that one should undertake something for the receipt!
