Directly from the canal dike you get a wonderful insight into the extensive Pöppinghäuser Forest mountain subsidence and nature reserve. Numerous bird species and even a gray heron colony can be observed on extensive water areas. The biotope is a relatively natural and structurally rich area for animal and plant species within the metropolitan area. Parts of the biotope are relatively undisturbed due to their location directly on the Rhine-Herne Canal. The adjacent canal is a technical waterway, but it also serves as a guide and orientation for many water birds.

The view from the directly adjacent canal path offers a great view of a wetland with fascinating natural development and is a spectacle that is not particularly often seen here in the Ruhr area.
