The dam wall of the Muldenberg dam is a curved gravity dam made of quarry stone masonry according to the Intze principle. It was built from 1920 to 1925 near Schöneck in the Vogtland region, south of the town of Muldenberg that gave it its name, and put into operation in 1925. It has the longest wall crown of all dam walls in Saxony. However, only 476 m of the 525 m are visible. A control passage in the dam wall was only built in a length of 90 meters during the reconstruction of the wall section destroyed by an explosion in 1945. It also had the function of a drainage tunnel. It was only extended by 200 meters in the 1960s. For high water, the dam has a fixed overflow in the middle of the wall. It then flows into a stilling basin at the base of the dam.

The Muldenberg dam is located in the Vogtland. It was built between 1920 and 1925 at the confluence of the Red and White Mulde and the Saubach near Muldenberg near Schöneck to supply the Göltzsch Valley with drinking water. The dam water is treated in the Muldenberg waterworks. The main supply area extends from Grünbach via Auerbach and Reichenbach to Schöneck and Klingenthal. The dam is also important for flood protection in the region. A turbine generates electricity for its own use.

Not far from the dam wall, a burial site commemorates a tragic accident that occurred a few days after the end of the Second World War. On the orders of the US Army, German prisoners of war had to dump ammunition from the defeated Wehrmacht in the dam. There was a huge explosion that probably cost the lives of more than ten people. The detonation damaged the dam wall so severely that the well-filled dam almost completely emptied within six days. The wall was rebuilt between 1946 and 1950 and extensively repaired between 2001 and 2007. Since 2008, the top of the wall has also been accessible to the public. Two new forelocks were built at the same time as the repairs.
