Indemini

Indemini, in the Alpine Lombard local dialect

The village was first mentioned in 1213 as Indempno and in 1260 as Indemine. Indemini was conquered by the Swiss Confederation because its location as the first place beyond the St. Anna Pass was strategically important. While the other villages in the Veddasca Valley oriented themselves towards Luino and Maccagno, Indemini was aligned with the Swiss Confederation. The pass was made accessible by soldiers in the Middle Ages, but not by car until the 20th century.

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the nine municipalities on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore was approved by eight municipalities: Caviano, Contone, Gerra, Indemini, Magadino, Piazzogna, Sant'Abbondio and Vira merged to form the municipality of Gambarogno. Only San Nazzaro spoke out against the merger of the municipalities. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the appeal was rejected, the merger came into force on April 25, 2010.

“The intelligence and the handwriting of the bricklayers of Indemini - Gilardoni continues - is evident in the rounded corners of the houses, the paving of the alleys, in the art of the roofing, in the beauty of the walls that gracefully bend into rounded corners, creating spaces and perspectives of remarkable beauty in the alleys.”

When visiting the village centre, the visitor is surprised by the narrowness of the alleys that cross each other and form a labyrinth in which it is easy to get lost, even though it is a small village. The place is so compact that Gilardoni called it a “fortress village”. The town is sunny and faces south, while the crown of the peaks and the Neggia pass protect it from the gusts of wind.

Indemini is isolated, distant and remote. One might wonder what prompted the first inhabitants to settle in such an uninviting place, hindered to the south by the steep slopes that form the border with Italy and cut off to the north by a mountain range. Before the road was built in 1920, Gambarogno was only accessible via the mountains. The connection to the Lombardy Veddasca Valley was made in 1966. Perhaps it is precisely because of its remote location, both to the north and the south, that this beautiful Ticino village was spared from the building frenzy of the 1960s. If you visit it today, you'll think time has stood still.
