The Sacra di San Michele is an abbey perched on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano. From the 12th to the 15th century it experienced its best period becoming one of the main centers of Benedictine spirituality in Italy.

Today it can be visited and, after climbing the 243 steps, from its summit you can enjoy a splendid view of the valley.

The abbey was founded between 983 and 987. It soon became one of the most important intellectual centers and became the center of a deep cultural exchange. The 12th century was the heyday of the abbey, where pilgrims and aristocrats were received. The abbey's considerable fortune was distributed almost throughout Europe. Later, the monastic life was increasingly influenced, even by the Savoy, until in 1622 the monastic life was dissolved by Pope Gregory the XV. In 1836 King Carlo Alberto entrusted the abbey to the priest Antonio Rosmini, and this established part of his religious community there. Today, the abbey is not administered by the Rosminian Fathers. Incredible what was built around the name of God. Great and absolutely worth seeing. For your well-being, a local bar is provided.
