            High above Kiedrich rises the landmark of Kiedrich, the Scharfenstein castle ruins. The castle complex was built around 1160. It was the ancestral home and seat of government of the wealthy Scharfenstein noble family, who were in the service of the Electorate of Mainz. The Scharfenstein castle ruins played an important role in history. The seal and coat of arms of the municipality are identical and show the Mainz double wheel and the keep of Scharfenstein Castle. This coat of arms emblem was used as a court seal around 1420. The Archbishop of Mainz had the castle built before 1215 to protect the road from Eltville over the hill. The archbishops resided here for a time and issued documents.
