The Ruhr Viaduct Witten is considered a "picture-book viaduct". It was built between 1913 and 1916 for the Witten - Schwelm railway line. Due to the First World War, commissioning was delayed until 1926.

After resistance from the population, who feared that the Ruhr floodplain would be disfigured, the viaduct was largely clad in natural stone. Only three arches on the north side are made of steel.
