Guide through time: after almost 450 years of uninterrupted use, the old lighthouse in Travemünde went into well-deserved retirement in 1972. The oldest lighthouse in Germany is still a popular excursion destination.

A finance bill from 1316 mentions a lighthouse keeper in Travemünde.

This is the first evidence of a beacon on the German coast. The bulbous brick tower, which can still be admired on the Leuchtenfeld today, dates from 1539. After almost 450 years of uninterrupted use, the beacon of hope for many sailors went into his well-deserved retirement in 1972.

The Maritim Strandhotel took on the task. A beacon on its roof now guides shipping from a height of exactly 114.7 m.

Travemünde not only has the oldest lighthouse in Germany, but also one of the highest beacons in the world.

The old lighthouse houses a maritime museum that is well worth seeing.

The old lighthouse Travemünde is the oldest lighthouse in Germany.

It was first mentioned in documents around 1330.

In 1534, Danish troops destroyed the tower.

In 1539, Dutch bricklayers built today's lighthouse.

The beacon was probably initially operated as an open wood fire, later with hemp oil lamps in front of gilded concave mirrors.

The upper part of the tower burned down in 1827 after a lightning strike.

It was renovated in the classicist style and fitted with petroleum lamps.

Electric arc lamps began to shine in 1903 and incandescent lamps in 1937. [Source: leuchtturm-travemuende.de]
