                The Spremberg Dam, also known as the Spremberg Reservoir, is located between Cottbus and Spremberg as a dam on the Spree and, together with the surrounding landscapes, forms the Spremberg Dam nature reserve. This dam, a dam made of earthen materials, is the fourth largest dam in Germany in terms of area and the only dam in Brandenburg that is considered a "large dam". Its functions include supplying domestic water, flood protection, generating electricity, raising low water levels and providing local recreation. It was commissioned on October 8, 1965.

                    History

                    According to records from the Cottbus District Building Authority, the Spreewald was hit by floods 124 times between 1897 and 1933. This meant that the residents were only able to harvest five normal harvests. In the 1920s, there were discussions about flood protection for the Upper and Lower Spreewald.

                    The geographical location and topographical and geological conditions made building a dam in this area problematic. It was not until the 1950s that a lowland dam was planned, which, in addition to flood protection for the Spreewald, also served to supply process water to the lignite-fired power plants. The dam, built between 1958 and 1965, represents a pioneering achievement together with the Quitzdorf and Bautzen dams.

                    The small town of Neumühle in the Bräsinchen district (municipality of Neuhausen/Spree) was flooded. The dam wall within the 3.7 km long dam is 2.2 km long with a crest height of 20 m
