In 1874, the Hörder Verein sank the Holstein colliery south of the village as another pit system for the coal supply to its iron and steel works.
In 1877, the mine went into operation with 477 employees. Since the pit water of the two pits was very brine, there were even considerations to open a spa. Holstein was decommissioned on August 1, 1928.

The gatehouse (Donnerstraße / corner of Briefsweg) and the Holstein colony have been preserved from the Holstein colliery. The Kauen building, which was used by the Asselen volunteer fire brigade until 2016, is located on the former colliery site. There is a manhole cover behind the chew.
The former colliery railway can still be identified by its high tracks. It branches off to the southwest west of today's S-Bahn station Wickede-West and follows the course of Buddinkstraße in the direction of Neuasseln in the form of an earthen dam.
