Command 3 of the guard regiment based here was responsible for the secret radio objects in Zeesen, Wernsdorf and Gosen and the guards for the outer ring of the Stasi prison in Hohenschönhausen.
There was a military training area, shooting ranges and training tracks.
The Ministry for State Security (Stasi) was also active on the site and trained officers of the then Iraqi head of state Saddam Hussein here. These received training in close combat and in dealing with explosives and nerve agents. In addition, friendly countries such as Ethiopia, Libya and the PLO also sent their cadres to Massow.
From 1995 the area was used as a rest area with a hotel. In the meantime, this operated as a rehabilitation clinic until 2012 and went bankrupt. The building served as the Spreewald Inn hotel until 2015. Today it is a shelter for asylum seekers. Some of the other buildings are empty or have been rented out to private individuals.
