Rock path (Kirkel)
The circular trail Felsenpfad is a 7 km long hiking trail near Kirkel in the Saarland and is located in the Sankt Ingbert-Kirkeler Waldgebiet. The rocks on the rock path are used by climbers and mountaineers as a training ground.

Directions Kirkeler Felsenpfad and geological nature trail

You are at the entrance to the "icing on the cake" of the Kirkeler hiking trails, the rock path with a geological nature trail. Experience a hike in a class of its own, marked here and further along the trail with an ibex. After a few minutes you come to the water cliffs, which constantly release dripping water in summer and winter alike. Gefolgen speak of a stratified source. These rocks are particularly attractive when, on frosty days, water spurts out and freezes into slender, meter-long icicles. From up here you can enjoy a magnificent view of the village and Kirkel Castle. As we continue we soon reach the Frauenbrunnen, a well-known spring. The geological nature trail, created in 1983, starts about 50m above in an easterly direction. At the beginning of the trail, an overview map was set up, which geologically includes the Saarland as well as neighboring parts of France and Rhineland-Palatinate and shows the places where the stones were found. If we turn left at the end of the geological nature trail, we are soon at the beginning of the much-vaunted rock trail. Fascinating rock formations impress us now, with high smooth or jagged walls, wide crevices, narrow chimneys and yellow-reddish brown colors. We stand in front of the mighty group of the Doomstones. According to legend, a horseman once fell here, which does not seem so impossible when looking at the rocks. We follow the ups and downs of the winding path, past all the picturesque groups that the locals call hollerlochs. At the end of the path we are again surprised by the Hollerkanzel: a rock that protrudes far and wide stands ghostly over the slope. It can be clearly seen that a part of it broke off and crashed some time ago. We also pay attention to the diverse band-like mineralization that gives the rock a special structure. Before starting the way back, you should enjoy the view from beyond the Hollerkanzel to the north; In good weather, you can even see the Schaumberg, the highest mountain in Saarland.
