As here at Andechs, the Way of the Cross usually leads with the - nowadays usually fourteen - stations up the mountain or hill (sometimes also called "Calverienberg" in memory of Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified) along. Early medieval forerunners of the Way of the Cross only had 7 stations and walking through them praying was also known as the “Walk to the Seven Footfalls”.

In some places, after the XIV. (And actually last) station, the burial of Jesus, another station follows: The resurrection of Jesus Christ. This additional Stations of the Cross extends the view of the Easter hope perspective: Overcoming death and suffering.

Stations of the cross in the religious sense are replicas of Christ's path of suffering. Going to pray on the Way of the Cross is an old Catholic custom. The Andechs Way of the Cross was founded in 1875. He follows an old pilgrimage route. The Andechs nature trail was established in 1976 by the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture and the then Munich land consolidation directorate to provide information about the rural cultural landscape.
