The staircase store built in 1603 was used as a shelter for cattle until mid-1980, until it was restored with great effort in 1984.

The building material of the storage facility comes from the local environment: the solid timber frame is made of oak from Eckersfeld, the typical landscape tree of Lower Saxony, as are the exterior stairs and the trapezoidal planks of the infill.

The roof is thatched from the former bog below the Schilsberg and covered with sods from the Westergellerser Heide.

The stair store is a small outbuilding in which goods are stored. The upper floor of the warehouse can usually be reached via a staircase attached to the outside of the gable, which gave the building its name.

On the other hand, the stairwell is so tightly covered that the stored goods, such as buckwheat and bacon, were protected from mice. In the past, the granaries were built within sight of the house, but at a distance. In the event of a fire in the farmhouse, the fire could not spread to the goods stored in the stairwell. Often they also served as a sleeping place for servants.
