On the way from Völlen or the Meyer shipyard to the popular Mitling Marker mill you quickly miss the visit to the Mitling marker church, which was built in the 13th century on a considerable mound. Probably she belonged to a monastery. But it is known that during the Reformation period, the Catholic monasteries were disassembled to the ground while the churches continued to be used. Care! Access is via the road from Völlen to Mitling Mark, but not over the cycle path on the dike.
Surrounded by a few farmsteads, the simple hall building with its unusual bell tower rises imposingly on the huge mound. Note also the now bricked up "Hagioskope" with their historically interesting functions.

Anyone traveling on the Ems route from Papenburg to Leer should not miss a visit to this church, located on a high hill. The charming place, which in the 13th / 14th Church built in the 19th century conveys its own spirit. The church, consecrated to the Holy Cross in the Middle Ages, may be a branch church of the coming Muhde.
The unusual bell tower, which consists of a parallel and covered wall to the west wall, quickly catches your eye. The attentive observer will also notice the bricked-up hagioscopes.
But the real magic of this place, which allows the presence of its origins to breathe, perhaps emanates from the ensemble of mound, cemetery, church, its windows, the old trees, the surrounding buildings in a special light on some days.

Spectacular place: almost magical church on a high, narrow mound. The ensemble of church, cemetery, "The old rectory" (meeting center / educational institution) and farms directly behind the Emsdeich is one of the most beautiful on the lower reaches of the Ems.
The brick church was built at the end of the 13th / beginning of the 14th century as a rectangular hall church. In the following centuries, conversions and additions were made. Also strange is the cultivation of the bell tower.
