The Rastkogelhütte in the Zillertal Alps is a hut of the German Alpine Club. From Hochfügen you can reach it on a simple mountain hike. Day hikers come here to enjoy the tasty meals. For ambitious summiteers, it continues from here to numerous peaks of the Zillertal Alps. In the first place of course is the eponymous Rastkogel, but also the Roßkopf, the Kleine Gilfert and the Marchkopf are popular summit destinations.

The hut is open in winter from early December to Easter, and in summer from early June to late October.

Anyone who crosses the Alps from Gmünd to Sterzing does not have the Kreuzjoch in their route. For athletes, this detour from the Rastkogelhütte is highly recommended. A tightrope walk over the mountain leads to the normal route over the Rauhenkopf. Later, a fellow hiker spoke of a "black slope". So please better only in dry weather and with appropriate surefootedness and experience.

1970s hostel style washrooms and bedrooms. Very noisy walls. The bathrooms are neglected and not really clean, just a shower for all overnight guests. Food was good, a nice view from the terrace.

Hello, we (a group of about 20 hiking friends) hiked from Hochfügen via the Rastkogelhütte to Melchboden. It's not an easy hike for the average experienced person! We had very good hiking weather. And yet the hiking trails have not been damaged by grazing cattle and the previous storms It was easy. You should also note the continuous climb, starting in Hochfügen up to a height of around 1950m. Only then does it go downhill again.

We were a group of 7 people and had booked 1 night in this refuge. Due to the very bad weather (Storm Boris September 2024), we cancelled this reservation. The guardians of this refuge charged the cancellation fees twice. Despite our repeated complaints for 1 month, it was impossible to get a refund. I therefore advise you to avoid this refuge because the guardians are thieves. There are many others in the area.
Furthermore, I would like to make the following remark. We are cancelling a reservation because it is dangerous (between 70 cm and 1 m of snow fell on the massif). We would have had to face the elements to avoid being penalised by cancellation fees. In the mountains, the DAV (German Alpine Club) must teach essential safety elements. Knowing when to give up is one of them.
