The Bleialfer Tunnel is a 400 meter long, disused railway tunnel of the Westeifelbahn. It is illuminated, but closed from November to March. During this time it serves as winter quarters for bats. Cyclists then have to use the bypass route over the ridge. Caution, altitude difference!

You should definitely turn on the light, as the tunnel also has a curve. The tunnel has lighting (status: 6/23), but not particularly brightly. The light is switched off between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Old illuminated railway tunnel that provides a beautiful connection to the High Fens nature reserve, the beautiful town of Monchau and the Vehnbahn towards Aachen.

08.05.24 Bleialf tunnel closed due to construction work. No signage due to diversion. A worker showed us the way towards Prüm: a climb of about 500 m at 8-10%. No one could tell us when the work would be finished. What a pity.

The history of the tunnel goes back to the 1880s. After the opening of the 24.3 km long first section of the West Eifel Railway from Gerolstein to Prüm on December 22nd, 1883, the 19 km long extension via Pronsfeld to Bleialf was opened on October 1st, 1886. In the further course to St. Vith, the topography required the construction of a tunnel, which was opened on October 1st, 1888 with the opening of the last section of the line, which meets the Vennbahn at Lommersweiler.

The Bleialf tunnel built at that time was 400 meters long. On January 1st, 1917, a second tube, also 400 m long, built by the company Grün & Bilfinger AG from Mannheim, was opened to the northeast at a distance of about 11.5 m from the first. In the first two decades of the 20th century, the West Eifel Railway line was gradually expanded to two tracks. Nevertheless, the old tunnel was closed in 1918.
