In the middle of the forest by a lake in Brandenburg there is an empty building that arouses interest because of its size and design. It is built in a U-shape, with a large entrance area in the middle, characterized by a high gable with the word “Bogensee” written on it. All outside doors are locked and just a few meters away is the former FDJ youth college “Wilhelm Pieck”.

Used as an educational facility after 1990, everything is now empty.

The Bogensee belongs to the district of Lanke in the municipality of Wandlitz in the state of Brandenburg. It lies between the districts of Wandlitz, Wandlitz, Prenden and Klosterfelde, about 15 kilometers north of the Berlin city limits. The lake became known for the country house built here for Joseph Goebbels and the later use as a youth college of the FDJ, whose buildings are under monument protection. The Land of Berlin is owned by the State of Berlin, which has been trying to sell the property of the former youth university, including the lake, through the Berlin Real Estate Fund since 2008.

Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels had the property, called the “Waldhof,” built in an English country house style in 1936 and used it as an official residence.

During GDR times, almost 60,000 domestic and foreign students were trained at the FDJ University. Even after the fall of the Wall, the buildings were used by the International Association for Social Work until 1999.
