The region around La Unión and Cartagena has a long history of mining, dating back to Roman times. Cabezo de las Colmenas is one of several mountains formed by the extensive mining operations. There you can find ruins of shafts, pits and dilapidated facilities that are reminders of this period. Mining in La Unión flourished especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when silver, lead, zinc and other metals were mined. The region's economy was heavily influenced by mining, and many people found work here.

The ruins include remains of old buildings, engine houses, chimneys and tunnels, some of which are crumbling and overgrown by vegetation. Some of the old machines and equipment are still on site and testify to the difficult working conditions and the level of technology at the time.

Particularly impressive are the rusty chimneys and ore processing plants that stand in the landscape like ghosts from a bygone era. A real experience!
