The Pingelanton on the other side of the train station in Lathen is probably the most famous landmark of the city. The old steam engine from Donawitz on the Hungarian-Austrian border was placed very prominently here in memory of the Lathen - Werlte small railway line built in 1898. The Kleinbahn transported 70,000 people per year over the Hümmling until 1970 when passenger traffic on the Hümmling route was discontinued.

But who knows, maybe we will experience a renaissance of the sympathetic rail connection as part of a traffic turnaround.

For all railway enthusiasts: In Lathen (Emsland), an old steam locomotive has stood as a memorial since 1977, commemorating the long-gone narrow-gauge railway between Lathen and Werlte. The locomotive is nicknamed "Pingel Anton." Although it didn't run on this line, its design resembles the engines that once steamed along here. The memorial locomotive originally came from Donawitz, a town on the Hungarian-Austrian border.

The Pängel Anton or Pengel Anton (or "Pingel Anton") is a Westphalian and North German expression for the steam locomotive-powered railway. The term was colloquially used for various railway lines, mostly small railways.

Because of the countless unguarded level crossings, the railways had to keep ringing to warn other road users (onomatopoeic pinging or pinging).
