Even the paths to the castle are a highlight, on top of the castle hill the tower is the highlight, it is well made and offers a great view.

Beautiful castle ruins with a magnificent view. Unfortunately, the vantage point on the tower with the panoramic windows is very small and of course heavily frequented. A well-designed information board provides the important "technical data" on the former castle and its history. The castle gate is signposted and offers a separate entrance to the ruins, it is well preserved.

Velburg Castle Ruins

In 1157, Counts Gebhard and Hermann von Velburg signed a document for the first time. They were closely related to the Counts of Sulzbach and exercised bailiwick rights for the Bishop of Bamberg, as well as escort rights on the Königsstraße in the Labertal. In 1188, the Austrian Count of Clamm inherited the rule.
Otto von Velburg and Clamm accompanied Emperor Frederick Barbarossa on the 3rd Crusade in 1189, but neither Barbarossa nor Otto returned from this venture.
Otto's son Ulrich, the last Count of Velburg and Clamm, followed Duke Leopold VI of Austria on the Fifth Crusade in 1217. Ulrich died on the way to Egypt - the end of the dynasty.
The castle went to the Wittelsbachs and was occupied alternately by Upper Bavarian and Palatinate caretakers. Around 1450, Velburg burned down almost completely, but was rebuilt.
In 1505, after the Landshut War of Succession, it came into the possession of the Palatinate/Neuburg line. In 1507, Count Palatine Friedrich II gave it to Jörg Wiesbeck of Salzburg as a gift in gratitude for his services as a field captain in the war.
During the Thirty Years' War, the Velburg was damaged by the Swedes. The caretaker then had the roofs removed and the complex fell into disrepair. In 1790, the stones were used to build the Velburg parish church. It was not until the 1880s that Velburg citizens secured the few remaining pieces and rebuilt parts of the castle ruins.
The Velburg is laid out in a triangle, which is due to the rocky terrain. The only building still visible today is the keep. The tower made of rubble stone with corner blocks is a modern reconstruction as a lookout point. How much of the historic keep or residential tower has been preserved can unfortunately no longer be determined from the masonry, but the floor plan is certainly still true to the original. The ground-level entrance is new, the window with wall niches could still be original.
A rectangular part of the ring wall, about 5 m high, stands with a round-arched passage to the north to the former outer bailey. The wall opening to the west indicates the former main gate.
Today nothing remains of the buildings of the fortifications except for a few hollows and elevations in the ground, but excavations could certainly bring to light some buried parts of the wall.
