Legend of its founding: Monks who were to build the church and determine its location asked God for a sign. They wanted to build the church where the donkey they were bringing with them would "bend over" to feed. But when the animal wanted to settle in the "Wüsteney" (Wüsteney) (Helzendorf), they moved it further to the spot where the "Bücken" collegiate church stands today.

Definitely worth seeing from the inside too! The Romanesque basilica with its twin towers was restored in the mid-19th century by an architect from Bücken. Important Gothic furnishings from the pre-Reformation period (carved altar, sacrament house, triumphal arch, the simple Romanesque pulpit is probably one of the oldest preserved).

The collegiate church of St. Materniani et St. Nicolai in Bücken
The monastery was founded in 882 by Archbishop Rimbert of Bremen.
A monument on the market square reminds of the founding legend: a donkey shows the place
where the church - initially in wood - is to be built.
Around 1050 a smaller stone building that was expanded in stages up to 1350.
By dissolving the monastery and its goods after the Reformation, a
structural decline.
It was not until 1863-68 that the church was thoroughly restored to its present appearance by the architect Adalbert Hotzen (1830-1922).
A bust on the church forecourt and the epitaph in the entrance portal remind us of this.
