The monastery in Müstair has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Plant Tower was already in use in the 10th century. Overall, the monastery is a witness to the time around 800 AD. Even today, the buildings are still used as a Benedictine monastery, but can be visited by visitors. In addition to a monastery museum, there is also the option of staying overnight there: muestair.ch/klostergemeinschaft.

      St. John's Monastery, Müstair
      Benedictine Monastery of St. John
The monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
The monastery is considered to be a foundation of Charlemagne, whose life-size stucco sculpture from the High Middle Ages stands between the central and southern apse of the monastery church. It was founded at the time of the Carolingian conquests of the Lombard (774) and Bavarian (778) territories; the oldest timber in the church was dendrochronologically dated to around 775, one year after the conquest of Lombardy. However, the monastery may have been set up by the Bishop of Chur, a confidant of the Emperor. In doing so, he secured access to the Vinschgau, which belonged to the Diocese of Chur until 1816. The monastery served the Emperor as a base, to control intersecting traffic routes, as a hospice for travelers, as an administrative center for the Bishop and, last but not least, as a place of worship. John the Baptist was given the patronage of the foundation, which was simply called Monasterium, from which the (current) Romansh name Müstair is derived. Originally a men's monastery, it has been a Benedictine convent since the 12th century. The first abbess known by name was Adelheid, documented between 1211 and 1231, and there are no contemporary sources about her origins.

The Benedictine monastery in Müstair is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The greatest treasure are the wall paintings in the church. Among the extensive Romanesque frescoes are wall paintings from the Carolingian period. Charlemagne founded the monastery in the 8th century. The place has its own atmosphere. The monastery offers guest rooms and its own products, e.g. B. Tea blends and herbs from the organically managed garden.

The small monastery garden inside shows how the nuns are still doing their gardening here.

A visit to the St. Johann Müstair Monastery (Unesco World Heritage Site) is definitely worth it. Both the monastery church and the adjoining cemetery are unique. No admission (except for a guided tour), but an optional donation.
