Right next to the lock is the first work of art on the canal: the large canal herring. It was created in 2003 by the artist Tim Adam from Kählstorf. His idea was to use the sculpture to commemorate the history of Berkenthin. On the canal, which was still the winding Stecknitz Canal in the Middle Ages, the "white gold", the salt from Lüneburg, was transported on boats from Lauenburg to Lübeck. From there it came to the neighboring countries via the Baltic Sea. Salt was very valuable in the Middle Ages because it was the only way to preserve fish and meat. The cities of Lübeck and Lüneburg gained their wealth through the trade in salt. And the places on the trade routes, such as Berkenthin, also benefited a little from the salt trade. On the way back, the boats often had salt herrings on board as cargo. That is the subject of the artwork. And its division into segments is intended to make it clear that the canal is divided by locks.

The canal herring sculpture became the logo of the Stecknitz region. Not only the TouristService, but also the office and the school use the canal herring as a trademark, which can now even be found on a flag, on ties, T-shirts, etc.

The herring of the Baltic Sea were the fasting prices of the Middle Ages and made the city of Lübeck the "Queen of the Hanseatic League". That brought wealth to the entire region.
To commemorate the "silver of the Baltic Sea", Tim Adam created the sculpture "Canal Herring".
