The Marienburg is practically always visible from the south and always provides beautiful motifs for photos in connection with a hike on a leash. Walking on a leash in the sunshine at dusk is particularly recommended!

A gift from King George V to his wife Marie

Marienburg Castle is one of the most important neo-Gothic monuments in Germany. It is 20 kilometers south of Hanover near Nordstemmen and forms an ensemble with the small town's train station, which was once expanded as a royal train station for the castle.

The Marienburg was built between 1858 and 1867. George V (1819-1878), King of Hanover, gave his wife Marie a castle as a summer residence for her 39th birthday - but initially only the grounds. Queen Marie made the decisive specifications during the construction planning. At first she was supported by the founder of the Hanover School of Architects, Conrad Wilhelm Hase. Hase worked on the palace construction for seven years, but was dismissed in 1864 after disagreements with the site management. Marie hired Edwin Oppeler, a student of Hase, as his successor. The existing building was then supplemented by a knight's hall with underfloor heating and a castle kitchen with hot running water.
