The Meggen mine

For a long time, the Meggen mine was one of the largest pyrite, zinc ore and barite mines in the world. Its beginnings go back over 140 years. Since 1890, the white pigment "Lithopone" has been produced from Meggen barite and zinc lye in the sister company "Sachtleben-Chemie" in Duisburg-Homberg.

Ore mining ended in 1992 due to exhaustion of economically recoverable reserves. The museum is housed in the former "Sicilia" mine, which has been completely preserved, and provides information with numerous exhibits with understandable texts and a film about the mining processes, the processing of the ores and the further processing of the concentrates. One of the two conveyor machines can be set in motion. The work of the miners is explained in a tunnel.
