After the report of the office Osterholz from the year 1836 the windmill Worpswede was built in 1701 by Claus Segelken. For the operation of the mill he had to pay a Canon of 12 Reichstalern. As early as 1723, however, he sold the mill to 4 landlords because of economic difficulties, and in 1737 they commissioned the ministry to Meierrecht. From now on, it was meierrechtlich the Crown Prince Worpswede, the Countess Elenora of Eschwege attached. In 1838, the structure, probably a post-windmill, is so outdated that it is now bigger and more economical than Erdholländer. This mill was repeatedly overhauled several times, such as 1936, 1959 and most recently 1995. Until 1956, the mill had a codend that was removed to work now with a wind rose modern. The many general overhauls - often carried by donations - are striking in the history of the mill. The economic situation with a relatively small area of arable land in the surrounding area must not have yielded golden fruits for every miller.

Today, with a white painted hull and white / red wing, it is a landmark of the artist's village of Worpswede.

After three generations in the hands of the Steil family, the mill has since 1888 (until today in the 5th generation) in the possession of the Müller family Schwenke. In order to be able to survive in the increasingly fierce competition, it has been repeatedly overhauled and adapted their technology to the respective modern technical standard, u. a. Retrofitting of sailgate on Venetian blind wing, installation of engines and a wind rose. Following the closure of the business in 1985, a contract was signed between the owner and the municipality to maintain the mill, which regulates future renovations. The "Friends Worpswede e.V." with its Mühlenkreis operate the mill, the landmark of Worpswede, which has always served the painters as a motive.
