The Mühleberg power plant was built between 1917 and 1920, at a time when demand for electricity was rapidly increasing. Its construction dammed Lake Wohlen.

The dam stretches over 12 km to the city of Bern. The engine house and the neighboring switch building are among the most beautiful concrete buildings from the first decades of the 20th century. With its many forest areas and bays, Lake Wohlen is a valuable and popular local recreation area for the city of Bern.

The weir and weir bridge were completely renovated between 2004 and 2006. On June 7, 2006, the new weir and weir bridge were inaugurated and opened to traffic. Machine 7 of the power plant produces traction power for the SBB.
