With its strict character, the Palace of Justice forms a monumental and dominant factor within the cityscape. When we drive into Dendermonde along various access roads, this monument always towers high above the city.
The Palace of Justice is located on the historical site where the old castle of the lords of Dendermonde stood until the second half of the 16th century. Justice had been administered here since the Middle Ages. In 1664, the remaining ruins and grounds of this castle were assigned to the new monastery of the Carmelite-Discalsen fathers. After the abolition of this order in 1797, the church was used as the 'Temple of Reason'.

The current courthouse was designed and built between 1923 and 1927 by architect Vaerwijck. On the facade we notice the coats of arms of the various cantonal capitals. A kiosk was built on the fifty-meter-high tower, decorated all around with copper columns, topped with gilded owls, a symbol of wisdom.
At the top is the Ros Beiaard enthroned with the four Heemskinderen, who have returned to the place where the castle of their father, Lord Aymon, once stood.
The court, located in the heart of Dendermonde, is a monumental and dominant factor in the cityscape with its strict character. When you enter Dendermonde via various access roads, this monument towers over the city from a distance.
