The Westerplas is one of the few places on the island with fresh water. From the viewing cabin you can clearly see how many birds make grateful use of this beautiful puddle.

The lake is very popular with water birds because of the fresh water. There are almost all Dutch duck species, as well as spoonbills, great crested grebes, coots and seagulls. Various shy birds live deep between the reeds on the bank. The mysterious bittern is probably the most special resident.
But there are also songbirds such as the birch siskin, the blue goblet, and the reed bunting.
The bird observation hut on Westerplas was opened in 2008.
