La Grande Chartreuse, the Great Charterhouse, is the mother monastery of the Carthusian Order. It is an impressive and unique facility. It cannot be visited, but you can walk around it. Definitely worth it. The film "The Great Silence" was filmed here. There is a museum further down the valley.
