The Viktualienmarkt is a traditional food market in the heart of the Old Town, which developed from a former farmers' market on Marienplatz. Since its relocation in 1807, it has become a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The market offers a wide selection of fresh food, delicacies, flowers, and regional specialties. In addition to permanent stalls and historic market booths, a beer garden and a maypole also characterize the scene. The Viktualienmarkt represents Munich's way of life, culinary diversity, and a vibrant market culture in the heart of the city.

A highlight of the Munich carnival is the "dance of the market women", which usually takes place every year on Mardi Gras.

The specialty of the beer garden on Viktualienmarkt is that all Munich breweries are served. Every six weeks the beer supply changes from one brewery to the next - that's why there are also beer glasses with all six coats of arms or emblems displayed.

The fountains and fountain sculptures on the Viktualienmarkt are dedicated to Munich folk singers and small artists, the great down-to-earth originals: Karl Valentin, Liesl Karlstadt, White Ferdl, Roider Jackl and others. Since 2011, the "Fountain Festival" is celebrated as a tribute to the first weekend of August.

The Roider-Jackl fountain by Hans Osel is reminiscent of the popular Freisinger singer-songwriter Jakob Roider, who became famous in the post-war period. Pointed and self-deprecating, he picked up Bavarian peculiarity and politics. A monument to his person was the last thing he wanted.
