The Viktualienmarkt is a traditional food market in the heart of the Old Town, which developed from a former farmers' market on Marienplatz. Since its relocation in 1807, it has become a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The market offers a wide selection of fresh food, delicacies, flowers, and regional specialties. In addition to permanent stalls and historic market booths, a beer garden and a maypole also characterize the scene. The Viktualienmarkt represents Munich's way of life, culinary diversity, and a vibrant market culture in the heart of the city.

Around 700 years ago, around 1315, Emperor Ludwig ordered the butchers to be banished to the outskirts, but over the years they have returned to the heart of Munich. The meat banks used to be in the middle of the market square (today's Marienplatz), including stench and slaughterhouse waste. This is over in the 14th century: Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian throws the butchers out of town. He has them moved to the edge of the city wall.

This has several advantages. Because the Pfisterbach flowed below the Petersbergl at that time, the butchers used it as a natural waste disposal facility for sewage and stinking slaughterhouse waste. In addition, they can support each other with their hard work among industry colleagues and sell inferior goods in the nearby open bank (“Der Pschorr” location).

The brick building in which the butchers' shops are located was built by the architect Arnold Zenetti in 1880. It is part of the Viktualienmarkt.
