The lime kilns Walheim / Kornelimünster are a series of historic kilns, which are mainly located in the south of Aachen district Kornelimünster / Walheim. They were used to extract limestone from limestone and were built between 1870 and 1924 and partially supplemented and modernized after the Second World War. However, they had to be shut down as early as the mid-1950s, as structural changes in the lime industry no longer made it profitable to operate smaller individual ovens.

The Kalkofenweg between Walheim and Hahn in the Indetal is unique in Germany. The basis for its creation were scientific studies on geological foundations and the use of limestone by the lime and lime industry.

The initiative launched in 1984 to restore the lime kilns in the Aachen-Hahn area, which are important in terms of building and industrial history, saved several of the lime kilns that were shut down over four decades ago from decay. In May 1989 the Kalkofenweg was opened to the public. With this way the restored lime kilns were connected to each other. A wealth of information is offered to visitors on on-site explanatory boards. On the first stage of the Eifelsteig we pass these old lime kilns. A board informs about the story. You have a good view of the ovens from above. There are other such ovens along the stage.
