The present church probably had a previous building made of wood.
It is unknown when the construction of the stone church in Filsum began. It is assumed that around the middle of the 13th century a hall with a semicircular brick apse was built on a slightly elevated area in the center of the village. At the end of the 15th or end of the 16th century, the apse was replaced by today's choir with a polygonal 5/8 finish and initially narrow, high windows.

St. Paul's Church in Filsum is one of the oldest churches in East Frisia. Its separate tower is worth a visit in itself. Open frequently, it's worth taking a short break in the hall church with its beautiful, three-part altarpiece and pulpit.

If you come through Filsum, you have to look at the Paul's Church from the inside!
