The market town of Saal an der Saale, with its district of Waltershausen, is idyllically situated on the banks of the Saale and Milz rivers, right in the heart of the Grabfeld region. The beautifully landscaped market square, with its church, school, and town hall, as well as numerous half-timbered houses, characterize the townscape. The Saal town hall, with its covered double staircase, was built in 1592. Today, it is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful town halls in the Grabfeld region. Not far from the market square, on Marienstraße, is the newly designed "Quartier hinter’m Dorf" (Quarter Behind the Village), a meeting place with a bicycle trail and a large herb spiral.

Saal's special feature is the well-known and charmingly situated pilgrimage site "Findelberg," situated on a small hill above the Saale valley. A detour on foot over the romantic three-arched sandstone bridge is worthwhile and offers an exceptional view of the Grabfeld landscape.
