The fortified church of St. Peter was built in 1513-1515 on a hill.

Worth seeing also the Stations of the Cross on the old churchyard wall, which originated around the turn of the century.

The church is open daily from 9 to 20 o'clock.

Old fortified church St. Peter, Berndorf

The municipality of Berndorf was first mentioned in 1121 when it was owned by the Steinfeld Abbey. It is possible, however, that a church has stood on the same hill before. Originally it is a Romanesque style church that does not have the typical features of a fortified church. In 1513-1515 the church was rebuilt and provided with a cross vault with medieval ornament paintings (approx. 1580). The nave was supplemented by a choir and the sacristy. The tower was built in 1545 and is said to have had a tall Gothic helmet at that time. Around 1665 a storm partially threw off the roof of the church and had to be repaired. In 1748 the spire burned down, 200 years later lightning struck the tower. Time and again, craftsmen had to repair the damage.

For more than 800 years the church served the community as a parish church. The new church took its place in 1927. It has remained as a memorial for those who died in the two world wars and as a cemetery church with a morgue. It is also visible from afar as a symbol of the community.

The so-called "fortified church" was probably built in the years 1513-1515 on the remains of an even older church. Thanks to extensive restoration work, it was saved from deterioration and made accessible to visitors interested in art and architecture. The Gothic reticulated vault, remains of the medieval wall painting and the richly carved baroque chair cheeks are particularly worth seeing.
