On the one hand, the Zechengrund is one of the oldest nature reserves in Saxony. Since 1912, attempts have been made to implement the first conservation efforts here. For this purpose, areas were purchased so that they could be preserved in their natural state.

On the other hand, the early mining use of this region can still be seen in the Zechengrund today. Today's Oberwiesenthal district was granted mining freedoms as Wyssenthal on March 19, 1527 by Duke George of Saxony for a period of six years after silver ore had been found in the upper mine area since 1525.

Entrance to the Tiefer Lämmel Tunnel – the last visible evidence of the silver mining era in the mine grounds.

Opened to the public from 1525 and walled in 1835, this tunnel, along with the Reichen-Trost Tunnel, Tiefer Marie Tunnel, the Christof Tunnel, the Andreas Tunnel, the Jordan Tunnel, the Altvater Tunnel, and the Thanhorn Tunnel, was a deposit of cobalt, bismuth, nickel, and silver ore.

Tunnels (narrow, low passages) were almost always driven horizontally, piece by piece, into the mountain. The accumulating mine water could drain away from them. The relatively brittle slate and gneiss rock, in which the silver veins were embedded, was roughly sheathed with local timber. The miners often worked their way quite laboriously with hammers and chisels. Beyond the Pöhlbach stream – on the Bohemian side – the extracted rock was processed in a water-powered crushing mill and collected for the smelter.

During the Wismut mining operations after 1945, some of the former tunnels were reopened.
