The Holzhafen park is centrally located in the Geestemünde district. Until the beginning of the last century, the timber port with the surrounding wood processing companies was located here. The facility is frequented by many young and old people, especially from Geestemünde, as well as by employees of the surrounding companies for local recreation. The Ernst-Barlach-Haus, a boules area, a football and children's playground, as well as lawns and seating areas around the large water basin, which was formerly bordered with clinker brick, offer a wide range of offers. In the Geestemünde play management plan, the wooden harbor was highlighted as an important open space for children and young people.
The bank areas of the water basin with a total length of about 400 m were in great need of rehabilitation.
The required rehabilitation of the bank edge with desludging of the pool floor was completed at the end of 2018. With a new and contemporary design of the shore and the adjacent areas, the relationship to the former use is made clearer.
The shore is secured by a riprap. The artificial clinker edge without any significant ecological value has been removed and revitalized as a flatter bank and made tangible. Combined with partial greening with riparian shrubs and individual boulders, the embankment is given more dynamism and a more natural structure. The body of water has remained in its basic form.
In 2019, the redesign of the green area was completed. The wooden harbor is now more beautiful and easier to experience. In order to improve accessibility to the green area, a new entrance was created and all other entrances were redesigned to be barrier-free.
A meadow framed with bee-friendly bulbous plants has been planted with copper rock pear as a new flowering band and is enjoying general popularity
With the redesign of the Holzhafen green area, the Holzhafen in Geestemünde has been sustainably modernized and is thus once again available to all citizens as an urban green recreation area.
