Around 1990 Bredevoort was struggling with vacancy and a declining middle class. In an attempt to turn the tide, the plan was subsequently devised to make a book town of Bredevoort. After working visits to the book towns of Hay-on-Wye (Wales) and Redu (Belgium) and a poll among potential interested parties, the Bredevoort Boekenstad project was started with the aim of making the historic core of Bredevoort more liveable again. This ultimately led to Bredevoort actually becoming a book city in 1993 with countless antiquarian bookshops and book markets. Over time, much of the trade moved to the Internet, reducing the number of antiquarian bookshops. At its peak, there were almost thirty bookstores, in 2015 there were about six left. On the other hand, there are now several book markets per year. After 2015, the former Koppelkerk, converted into a cultural center and Boekencafé, will function as the center of numerous book activities. Since then there has also been more attention for the history, art and culture in Bredevoort.
