The Château de Ferrette is one of the oldest in Alsace. The ruins of the upper castle offer a superb panorama of the Vosges, the Black Forest and the Jura. The lower castle has several round towers open at the throat and equipped with fire hydrants. Allow 45 to 60 minutes for a self-guided visit to the castle.

Ferrette originated from the County of Pfirt, founded in 1105. At its peak in the 15th century, the Château de Ferrette was built as one of the largest castles in southern Alsace. Until the end of the Thirty Years' War, the German emperors still recognized themselves as Counts of Pfirt. Afterwards, Pfirt passed through the hands of the Sun King and Cardinal Mazarin to Honoré IV of Monaco. This remains unchanged to this day. Therefore, the Grimaldi family still bears the title "Count of Pfirt."

The first mention of Château de Ferrette dates back to around the year 1100, making it one of the oldest castles in Alsace.
Seat of the Counts of Ferrette, it became possession of the Habsburgs in 1324.
The castle suffered heavy damage during the Thirty Years' War, notably in 1634/35, and was pillaged and burned in 1789.
Since then, it has been in a state of ruin and freely accessible to visitors.
