The steel railway truss bridge is simply called Südbrücke and connects Mainz across the Rhine with Gustavsburg. A curiosity: The northern of the two towers made of red brick at the western (Mainzer) end of the bridge is inhabited.

Following the Roman bridge and the bridge of Charlemagne, the southern bridge was the first fixed Rhine bridge in Mainz after about 1050 years. It was opened in 1862 and replaced the Mainz - Gustavsburg traject of the Rhein-Main-Bahn, a ferry connection with two paddle steamers. The South Bridge also made the Mainz - Kastel train superfluous.

1910-12 the bridge was strengthened and adapted for larger standard profiles of the trains. After the bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht shortly before the end of the Second World War, traffic was initially routed over replacement bridges. The southern bridge was rebuilt in 1948/49.
