The oldest planetarium in the world is located on the ceiling of the living room of a beautiful canal house in Franeker. This accurately moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by the Frisian Eise Eisinga.
Tuesday to Saturday 10 am - 5 pm

The Eisinga Planetarium is the oldest working model of the solar system. It was built from 1774 to 1781 by Eise Eisinga in Franeker, after a mass panic broke out in the Netherlands in 1774 that a series of planets this year would cause cosmic collisions and Eise Eisinga wanted to dispel these concerns. The model is located on the ceiling of a room and is controlled by a pendulum clock and powered by additional weight trains. The planets move in real time on long threads hanging from the ceiling.
