The bat fountain is located in Bolsward directly in front of the church and is therefore very idyllic.
I found this fountain very interesting, somewhat simply designed but still very impressive! I actually overcame my fear, climbed the stairs up to the bat, stood still for 3 photos and then bravely climbed back down again. ;-)

The Bat really became the patron of the burnt down Broerekerk. Johan Creten from Belgium was inspired in his design for art project 11fountains by the gargoyles that you often find at churches. They are actually also bats.

Bats are intriguing, useful animals that are crucial to the ecological system because they hunt insects. In Asian culture, the bat symbolizes wealth, happiness and a blessed old age. For us he symbolizes both dark forces and a positive, saving force. Think of Batman, or the facades of the great cathedrals where he, in the form of gargoyles, keeps the demons at bay. That fits beautifully with the burned down Broerekerk. The stairs on the back invite the visitor to symbolically overcome the bat.
