The weir and lock system in the Vienna district of Nussdorf is a hydraulic engineering facility at the point where the Danube Canal branches off from the Danube. It was built on the basis of the law passed by the Reichsrat on July 18, 1892, concerning the implementation of public transport systems in Vienna.

Since 2005, the weir has been used to generate energy using a small power plant, and since April 2017 fish have been able to climb up the weir using a fish ladder.

The bridge was built in 1894-1899 according to the design by Otto Wagner and named after Joseph Maria Schemerl von Leythenbach (born March 26, 1752 Ljubljana [Ljubljana, Slovenia], Kronland Carniola, † January 28, 1844 Vienna), architect and hydraulic engineer.

Rudolf Weyr created the two bronze lions on the bridge (adopted as a logo by the Viennese car factory Gräf & Stift with the consent of the city administration). The bridge includes weir fields that can be lowered into the water if necessary. As part of the Nussdorf weir and lock system, it regulates the inflow of Danube water into the Danube Canal, which begins here. A neighboring lock system is available for shipping.

The name often appeared erroneously in Schemmerlbrücke in official texts.

Since the border between the 19th and 20th districts mostly runs along the right, western bank edge of the Danube Canal, the Schemerl Bridge is largely in the 20th district.
